Nellie Bramlet serves
as a Foster Grandparent at A Brighter Community daycare center.
Everyone there – the administrators, teachers, parents and students
– calls her “Grandma.”
Grandma serves in a classroom with 3- and 4-year olds. She spends
most of her time helping children who are behind their peers and
need extra help. However, for 30-45 minutes each day, she gathers
together a group of four children who are “gifted.” She provides
them with an “enrichment program” that wouldn’t happen if she
weren’t there.
The gifted children are truly amazing. Grandma teaches them reading,
writing, arithmetic and science. By the end of the last school year,
all of them could say and write the days of the week and months of
the year. While most in the children in the class are mastering the
alphabet, Grandma has taught her small group to spell “Wednesday,”
“November,” and many more words.
At the end of the last school year, Grandma received a “thank you”
card from one of the parents. The parent wrote, “Thank you for
teaching Jimena her ABC’s -- forwards and backwards. She says the
alphabet backward so fast, and without mistakes. It is amazing all
the words that she can spell. My family greatly appreciates your
dedication and the great job you are doing. Thank you for all you
have done for our child!”
Because of their Grandma, these gifted children are receiving the
stimulation and challenge they need to help them reach their full
potential.
