On February 23rd, we were honored to win the 2017 WEDU Be More Knowledgeable Award for Educational Outreach for our Lowry Park Neighborhood Initiative. The Lowry Park Neighborhood Initiative builds on the foundation of our Foster Grandparent Program, providing in-the-classroom intensive tutoring and mentoring by devoted and skillful volunteers. On top of that foundation, we add stimulating curriculum add-ons for the classrooms with the help of LIVE animal encounters from our partners at Tampa’s Lowry Park Zoo. Finally, we add evening parental engagement events, called Family Fun Nights, to bring the Kindergartners families into the learning process. This innovative program stands alone for its layers of support for academically challenged kids. We are so grateful and honored that WEDU chose the Lowry Park Neighborhood Initiative as its winner for the 2017 WEDU Be More Knowledgeable Award. It was a thrill to stand beside our partners at Tampa’s Lowry Park Zoo and our major funders, the Children’s Board of Hillsborough County and the Corporation for National and Community Service, to receive this award.
