Beth-El Farmworkers Ministry
18240 US HWY 301 S
Wimauma, FL 33598-4307

The Beth-El Farmworker Ministry has been helping farmworkers in good times and bad for over fifty years. Because of health and economic devastation wrought by the pandemic since March, Beth-El is working harder than ever to provide humanitarian aid. They have had to increase food distribution from around 500 bags for week to almost 900 bags. And, they have to do this with a shortage of volunteers.

Volunteers are always welcomed at Beth-El! They have many needs that cannot be accomplished with its limited staff, so they depend heavily on volunteers.

In response to COVID 19, Beth-El has implemented policies to insure the safety and well-being of all at the Mission. Only those who are scheduled are allowed onsite. For this reason, volunteers sign up each week for the task they would like to help out with. Upon arrival, digital temperature checks are taken and each guest is screened. All in the building are required to wear masks, maintain social distancing, and there is a limit to 10 volunteers at a time. Additionally, sanitizing stations are spread throughout and masks and gloves are available.

There are many opportunities to serve. Not only are volunteers needed for the operation of the food pantry which is Tuesday mornings and Wednesday afternoons, but they are also needed for its preparation. Individuals and teams come in Monday-Friday to prepare bags and fill individual bags of beans and rice. These tasks are essential to the success of the food pantry. They are also easy to do and require no previous experience.

Language barriers and other factors can make it harder for Latino residents to get vaccinated in Florida. About one-fourth of Florida's Hispanic population has been vaccinated against COVID-19, compared to nearly 40% of whites. Beth-El Farmworker Ministry is trying to close those gaps by making it easier for Latino residents to access shots. They will be holding another Covid Vaccine event on Saturday, May 29 and need help.

The Beth-El Farmworker Ministry partners with Seniors in Service of Tampa Bay, in their Retired or Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) for those 55 and better. If you are 55 or over you will be offered to participate in RSVP and enjoy the extra perks. (For more on RSVP click here.)
