100 Good Guys St. Pete Helps Classroom Grandparents Reach More Students

More students in Tampa Bay will receive the reading support and encouragement they need thanks to the generosity of 100 Good Guys St. Pete and their recent $10,000 donation to Seniors in Service.

The funding will help expand Seniors in Service’s Classroom Grandparents program into additional schools, placing two new volunteer grandparents at Mount Vernon Elementary and New Heights Elementary in St. Petersburg. These trained volunteers work one-on-one with students who need extra academic and emotional support, helping children improve their reading skills while building confidence in the classroom.

For many students, having a caring adult consistently encourage them can make a lasting difference. Classroom Grandparents provide personalized attention that busy classrooms often cannot accommodate alone. Through reading practice, mentorship, and positive reinforcement, volunteers help students feel supported, capable, and excited to learn.

The Classroom Grandparents program connects older adult volunteers with local schools throughout Tampa Bay, creating meaningful intergenerational relationships that benefit both students and seniors. Volunteers not only help children strengthen literacy skills, but also serve as trusted role models who listen, encourage, and celebrate student successes along the way.

At their third meeting, 100 Good Guys St. Pete selected Seniors in Service as the recipient of their collective giving effort, resulting in a $10,000 contribution that will directly support students in local classrooms.

This investment means more struggling readers will receive the extra help they need to succeed academically and emotionally. It also ensures teachers have additional support in the classroom while strengthening connections between generations across the community.
