Mayor Jane Castor Showers Our Classroom Grandparents With Praise

Mayor Jane Castor recognizes Classroom Grandparents volunteers during a Seniors in Service training event, celebrating their impact on student literacy and mentoring in Tampa schools.

Seniors in Service welcomed City of Tampa Mayor Jane Castor to a Classroom Grandparent in-service training to celebrate the volunteers making a difference in Tampa classrooms. Through Castor’s Classroom Companions, a partnership with Seniors in Service and AmeriCorps Seniors, Classroom Grandparents tutor and mentor young students in three Tampa elementary schools. Their service helps children strengthen literacy, build confidence, and experience the steady encouragement of caring adult role models.

Together we are making a positive impact on the community by tutoring young children and showcasing the importance of service in Tampa.

Mayor Castor praised our Classroom Grandparents and surprised them with ‘Castor’s Classroom Companions’ t-shirts. One volunteer was overheard saying, “The Mayor is thanking us, but I’m the lucky one who gets to be with the kids!"

Support from Mayor Jane Castor, City of Tampa, and AmeriCorps means more children will improve literacy and emotional intelligence skills through tutoring and mentoring from Classroom Grandparents. Watch the Fox 13 News story below and get a closer look at that day, including testimonials from our outstanding volunteers!
